Is Your Dog Itching More Than Usual? 5 Signs Your Pet Might Have Allergies

Updated: Jan 20

What to Watch For — and How Grooming Can Help

If your dog is constantly scratching, licking, or rubbing their face on the carpet, it’s not just a weird quirk — it might be allergies. And no, dogs aren’t just allergic to food. Like us, they can react to pollen, dust, mold, grass, cleaning products, or even grooming products.

The tricky part? Dogs can’t tell us they’re itchy or uncomfortable — but their body definitely shows it. As a mobile groomer, I often spot the early signs of allergies during grooming appointments. Here are five common symptoms pet parents should look out for.

1. 🐾 Excessive Scratching or Chewing

All dogs scratch sometimes. But if your pup is chewing on their paws, scratching at their ears, or rubbing their face on furniture constantly, it’s a red flag. Allergies can cause itchy, inflamed skin, and dogs will try to soothe the irritation however they can — even if it makes things worse.

Pro tip: If you notice red or raw spots where your dog’s been scratching, it’s time to talk to your vet.

2. 🐶 Red, Irritated Skin or Hot Spots

One of the most common signs of a skin allergy is redness or inflammation, especially on the belly, armpits, ears, and paws. In more severe cases, dogs develop “hot spots” — painful, infected patches of skin caused by constant licking or biting.

During grooming, I’ll often spot these areas under the fur — especially in double-coated breeds where skin issues can go unnoticed.

3. 🧼 Frequent Ear Infections or Head Shaking

Dogs with allergies are more prone to ear infections, especially floppy-eared breeds like Cocker Spaniels or Labs. If your pup is constantly shaking their head, scratching their ears, or if you notice a bad smell coming from their ears, allergies may be to blame.

Regular ear cleaning during grooming helps manage buildup and can prevent infections from starting.

4. 💨 Unusual Shedding or Hair Loss

Excessive shedding — especially if it’s coming out in clumps — can be a sign of more than just seasonal change. Allergies can affect the health of your dog’s skin and coat, leading to dryness, flaking, or even bald patches.

A good de-shedding treatment and moisturizing shampoo can help soothe the skin and support healthy coat regrowth.

5. 🐕 Scooting or Licking Under the Tail

Believe it or not, some dogs show allergy symptoms in their rear end. Constant licking or scooting across the floor can be caused by inflamed anal glands, which can also be irritated by food or environmental allergies.

Groomers can safely express anal glands and check for irritation — another reason regular grooming matters!

🐾 Final Thoughts

Allergies aren’t just a seasonal annoyance — they can seriously affect your dog’s comfort and health. While grooming isn’t a cure, it can absolutely help manage the symptoms by keeping skin clean, removing allergens from the coat, and spotting early signs before they get worse.

If you’re noticing any of these signs in your pup, don’t wait. Schedule a grooming appointment and let’s get your furry friend back to feeling their best — clean, comfortable, and allergy-aware.
